Project Details

During school holidays, the client commissioned CPM Design & Build to convert a school gymnasium. The gymnasium, which had a sprung Canadian timber floor, was to be converted by the addition of a mezzanine area to house an I.T. suite with a new library and examination suite below.

Construction involved cutting through the timber floor to form concrete foundations to support the curved steel mezzanine frame, designed by the architect as a streamlined, aerodynamic structure. The balustrade to the mezzanine floor involved architectural ironmongery sunk into ash nosings to host glazed panels bearing the school crest

Regulations required a concrete staircase to be constructed. This was built with timber and constructed in situ, as there was no access for a pre cast finished unit to be brought in and positioned.

To enhance the aesthetics and the lighting of the new library and examination suite areas, a Paraline mirrored ceiling was installed under the mezzanine, to reflect natural light to the reading area.
